POSITION: Visiting Lecturer. IC036, 100%, Instructional Academic Staff, Terminal, 9-month appointment 2024-2025 academic year with possibility of renewal, one vacancy.

POSITION SUMMARY: Designs and facilitates classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction within an academic discipline to ensure quality delivery of instruction and integration of content within an academic work unit. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.  Advises students, facilitates course assessment, and may supervise student employees. Provides service as a contributing member of the department. 

As the premiere and only four-year Legal Studies and Criminal Justice Program in the Northland region, we are dedicated to preparing students for careers and advanced studies in the areas of law, criminal justice, and beyond.

We are seeking applicants for a Visiting Lecturer position, with a specialized focus in either Legal Studies or Criminal Justice who demonstrate a commitment to student learning and development. The ideal Legal Studies applicant will have a strong background in areas such as constitutional law, legal theory, civil rights, or international law. The ideal Criminal Justice applicant will have expertise in areas such as criminal law, corrections, or juvenile justice.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Teach 12 credits per semester on campus, incorporating Room and Zoom
    • Possible Legal Studies courses include: Alternative Dispute Resolution; Jurisprudence; Civil Procedure; Environmental Law; Comparative Law; etc. (see catalog for full listing)
    • Possible Criminal Justice courses include: Crime, Corrections, and Punishment; Criminal Justice Policy Issues and Reform; Delinquency and Juvenile Justice;  Community Corrections; etc. (see catalog for full listing)
  • Develop the materials necessary for teaching those courses, including syllabi, Canvas modules, assignments, etc.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other members of the CJUS / LSTU program to provide support and advising for students in multiple capacities  

 Other Duties:

  • Complete required trainings and professional development as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

  • MA/MS in criminology, criminal justice, legal studies, or a related field, OR Juris Doctorate (JD)
  • Higher education teaching experience
  • Ability to effectively create an inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds and foster collaboration and respect for varied perspectives among members of the campus community

This position is currently ineligible for H1-B sponsorship. A qualification for this position includes independent eligibility to work within the United States upon hire date.

 DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

  • PhD in criminology, criminal justice, or a related field, OR Juris Doctorate (JD)
  • Professional experience in justice settings such as law enforcement agencies, courts, corrections, and/or research
  • Willingness to engage in community partnerships and demonstrated connections to potential law or criminal justice regional partners
  • Experience teaching or learning in an online environment
  • Ability to teach a course on the topic of tribal sovereignty
  • Legal Studies Applicants:
    • Familiarity with and willingness to teach using traditional pre-law pedagogical methods including IRAC.
    • Familiarity with legal databases such as Westlaw

SALARY & BENEFITS:  Salary range for this position is: $50,000 - $54,000 annually. Specific benefit information can be found here. A snapshot of benefits offered for this position include:

UW-Superior, A Superior Place:

The University will not reveal the identities of applicants who request confidentiality in writing, except that the identities of “final candidates” must be revealed upon request. According to the Attorney General, “final candidates” under Wisconsin law means the five candidates who are considered most qualified for the position. See Wis. Stat. Sec. 19.36(7)(a).
