Research Coordinator - East TN AgResearch & Education Center – JRTU, Knoxville, TN

SUMMARY: JRTU is one of six units that comprise the ETREC. This position coordinates and performs technical work involved in a research facility, including all phases of daily agricultural/research operations and animal care; participates in the planning and feasibility assessment of research projects and protocols; ensures quality of research by coordinating research trials and assigning appropriate personnel; keeps various records related to research, equipment, supplies, etc.; develops new and/or revised methods and applies them to agricultural and research operations; operates general-purpose and research equipment (including feed mill equipment); purchase materials and supplies; addresses and resolves unplanned repair, electrical, plumbing and other operational issues (at varying indoor and outdoor conditions); and other duties as assigned by Center Director. Qualifications :

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for leading and supervising JRTU personnel, oversees the daily operations and activities.
  • Assists and advises research faculty and staff in planning and conduct of research projects in a
  • 30,000 square foot research facility.
  • Supervises the activities in a laboratory or animal care facility.
  • Oversight of facility infrastructure including repair and maintenance of specialized research equipment.
  • Compile, analyze, and act upon records related to research, farm operations, research equipment, supplies, to support ongoing projects etc.
  • Record Individual Animal Records: date, treatment, location, feed, other applications to drive research project decisions and data collection.
  • Operate general-purpose and specialized farm and/or research equipment.
  • Primary contact for faculty, OLAC, IACUC, and OSP regarding Little River Unit herd.
  • Cultivates strong relationships and consults with vendors to ensure custom research diets can be created and maintained.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory of materials and supplies necessary for function of building and research projects.
  • Calculates estimated costs to complete research projects.
  • Tracks and administers 'R' account expenditures.
  • Implements research work plans.
  • Follows animal care and use protocols.
  • Other duties as assigned by the director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Required:
    • High school diploma and three years of experience
    • Detailed knowledge of animal husbandry and associated terminology
    • Detailed knowledge of feed center equipment and bulk agricultural feeds
    • Strong relationships with local CO-OPs and nutrient manufacturers
    • General knowledge of research techniques
    • Ability to operate standard agricultural and laboratory equipment
    • Computer skills including internet and spreadsheet knowledge required
    • Ability to execute and oversee research projects
    • Ability to allocate and coordinate resources
    • Ability to oversee and direct the work designated personnel and/or students
    • Ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Preferred:
    • Bachelor's degree in a relevant agricultural science or related discipline plus five years of experience. Supervisory experience.
