Information Specialist – Research and Innovation Center

Full-Time, Exempt, Market Range 10

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for an Information Specialist in the Research and Innovation Center (RIC) at the College of Communication and Information (CCI).

The Position: The Information Specialist is part of the CCI Research and Innovation Center (RIC) that supports CCI researchers. The Information Specialist will assist CCI researchers with externally funded grant activities including, but not limited to, grant proposals and award reports. This position is responsible for editing and proofreading supporting proposal documentation (e.g., biosketches, data management plans) to ensure conformity with agency and grant specifications. This position also supports the CCI committee that processes IRB applications within the college. The role works closely with the RIC team to support funded activities, designs and delivers training to CCI researchers related to RIC-supported research processes, contributes to supporting the CCI community of researchers including faculty staff and students, and maintains relationships with outside partners.

The Information Specialist is expected to:
  • Draft outlines of grant proposals to send to faculty members for their input.
  • Edit drafts created by faculty members to match the formats specified on grant solicitations.
  • Do limited background literature reviews for proposal narratives.
  • Edit documents for grammar and punctuation and suggest improvements to the structure and tone.
  • Draft and edit additional required documents for grants such as biosketches and data management plans.
  • Proofread and edit CVs to conform to agency specifications with grant proposals.
  • Proofread supporting documents to be submitted with grant proposals.
  • Review that budget items and amounts match project activities listed in the narrative.
  • Assist CCI researchers with navigating the IRB submission software.
  • Assist CCI researchers with finding internal and external funding sources.
  • Match potential funding opportunities to faculty research interests and send them to faculty.
  • Communicate with grant officials and research administrators about grant opportunities on behalf of faculty members.
  • Develop and deliver training related to RIC-supported research processes.
  • Support RIC activities with CCI community members and external partners on-campus and beyond campus.
  • Develop/maintain processes for RIC services that are in the position’s portfolio.
  • Assist with maintaining records and documentation to ensure compliance with grant oversight or regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with RIC team members including the CCI Innovation Labs to provide services to the College and to work with external partners.
  • Various other support as needed.
To be successful in this role, candidates are required to possess:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Communications, or related field.
  • Three years of experience in writing and editing with online research tools in a team setting.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Skills that demonstrate the ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with many different types of individuals and groups.
  • Ability to demonstrate working successfully with tight deadlines.
  • Excellent skills with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to successfully work as a member of a team.

Qualifications :

Our ideal candidate has:
  • Master’s Degree in English, Information Sciences, Communications, or related.
  • Experience working with faculty members in an academic setting.
  • Experience with technical writing and editing in an academic environment.
  • Project management leadership experience.
  • Experience working with federal agencies.
  • Knowledge of project management tools and processes.
  • Knowledge of the Institutional Review Board requirements and processes.
  • Knowledge of grant processes.
  • Knowledge of funding databases.
  • Knowledge of federal agencies.
