The Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and Nuclear Engineering (NE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) are seeking applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in the areas of radioactive pollutants and nuclear decommissioning. We welcome applications from highly qualified and motivated individuals with a passion for teaching and research. The successful candidate is expected to build an exceptional record of accomplishments including an externally-funded research program, impactful scholarship, effective mentorship of students from diverse backgrounds, and effective and inclusive teaching.

The new position will be a joint hire between CEE and NE. We are seeking a scholar with interests and expertise in topics such as environmental impacts of radioactive materials including fate and transport, risk assessment, waste treatment and stabilization technologies, contaminated site remediation, decommissioning of nuclear facilities, and waste management. The faculty member will contribute to a new BS degree in Environmental Engineering and the Nuclear Decommissioning and Environmental Management (NDEM) minor. In the latter capacity, the faculty member will teach courses related to environmental radiation protection and environmental engineering.

The Tickle College of Engineering is undergoing an unprecedented period of growth and success and anticipates adding over 30 new faculty over the next three years as part of ambitious cluster hiring campaigns lead by Chancellor Donde Plowman and Dean Matthew Mench. The college has set records in research expenditures, enrollment, incoming student GPA, diversity, and intellectual property development for two years running. New facilities include the state-of-the art Zeanah Engineering Complex, the University of Tennessee Manufacturing and Design Enterprise (TN-MADE) facility, and the Innovation South building now under construction that will house UTK's Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility (FCMF). TCE currently has 185 Tenure/Tenure Track and 67 Non-Tenure Track faculty in its seven academic departments and offers 12 undergraduate, 16 MS, and 15 PhD degree programs. Affiliated with TCE and located in Tullahoma, Tennessee, the UT Space Institute is a hub of aerospace and defense research. The college is also home to eight research centers and three interdisciplinary institutes. With approximately 3,800 undergraduate and 1,150 graduate students, the college sits 31st among public universities in the most recent U.S. News and World Report graduate rankings. Faculty in the college have won 21 early career awards (NSF, DoE, DARPA, AFOSR, and ARO) since 2016. In FY22, the college had NSF HERD research expenditures of $109 million.

CEE has 23 tenure-line faculty members and three non-tenured full-time teaching faculty and offers baccalaureate, masters, and PhD degrees in all areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The department ranks in the top 30 US institutions in scholarly publications and citations per faculty member according to Academic Analytics. NE has 19 tenure-line faculty members and eight non-tenured full-time research faculty. It hosts the largest graduate program in the country and ranks among the top-ten NE graduate programs in the US.

We are especially interested in applicants who can collaborate with researchers at nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) through the newly-formed University of Tennessee Oak Ridge Innovation Institute, as well as the flourishing NDEM industry in the Oak Ridge area. Additional collaboration opportunities exist through a number of multidisciplinary centers including the Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment, the Tennessee Water Resources Research Center, and the Baker School of Public Policy and Public Affairs. Qualifications

· Earned doctorate in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field at the time the position is filled

· Research and teaching interests in environmental impacts of radiological pollutants

· Demonstrated record of publishing in high quality academic journals

· Strong communication skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment

· Eligibility to work in the US
