Laboratory Specialist



The Becker Lab at the University of Pittsburgh is interested in hiring a Laboratory Specialist. The lab studies molecular mechanisms regulating cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and sudden death. The candidate will independently perform research work in a highly collaborative environment and will have the opportunity to assist with manuscript preparation. The candidate will manage mouse models and perform cell culture experiments. Molecular biology and/or biochemistry experience strongly preferred. There are opportunities for independent research projects for interested candidates.

Job Duties:
1. mouse colony management
2. murine cardiovascular phenotyping
3. tissue immunohistochemistry
4. protein biochemistry including immunoblotting
5. molecular biology assays including PCR


Job Summary

Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.


Essential Functions

Must be detail-oriented, have good communication skills, be able to work as in a team-based environment, and be able to work well independently.


Physical Effort

Incumbent must be able to move between university labs and building daily.

Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. Ability to climb step stool to retrieve stored items. Must be able to stand and walk among bulky pieces of scientific equipment. Must be able to bend, kneel, and stand for longer periods of time.
