The Urban Teaching Residency (UTR) program at Penn Graduate School of Education is an in-service teacher education program that offers students the ability to earn a master's degree and/or teaching certification while working full-time. UTR is organized around issues of equity, social justice, and anti-racism as well as research-based frameworks of teaching and learning.

UTR seeks an instructor who will create a climate that embraces excellence and diversity, with a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring that enhances the work of the program and attracts and retains a diverse student body. We are seeking an instructor for Child Development (see the course description below).

Child Development (Virtual, Fall, 2024): This course introduces students to contemporary and historical theories of development while grounding application of these theories in students' teaching practice. The course focuses on how well-designed learning environments create a safe and responsive classroom that supports the learning and development of young children and adolescents and nurtures positive relationships. Students learn how understanding the developmental trajectory of their students impacts teaching, learning, and relationships. Key topics covered include developing meaningful relationships with students and fostering an understanding of students as whole humans that considers the physical, intellectual, psychological, and emotional progression of children and adolescents.

Responsibilities:

● Design course syllabus, assignments, lessons, and activities to meet course and program goals

● Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students

● Assess student progress and provide timely and constructive feedback

● Collaborate with other instructors and program leadership to ensure a cohesive learning experience

● Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance

● Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and program leaders


Qualifications
Qualifications:

● Master's degree (required)

● Previous K-12 teaching experience is required (experience teaching in urban schools preferred)

● Previous undergraduate or graduate level teaching is required (experience teaching comparable courses is preferred)

● Knowledge of subject matter

● Commitment to UTR’s mission to promote anti-racist and social justice oriented teaching and learning grounded in an asset-based approach to local communities and stakeholders

● Strong communication and interpersonal skills

● Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of diverse learners
