Job Summary

The UK Department of Psychiatry and the SMART Clinic seek a Peer Support Specialist to work with patients with a diagnosed substance use disorder (or related diagnosis). The SMART Clinic focuses on providing care to patients with substance use disorders through a holistic approach which includes individual and group counseling, peer support services and the medical treatment of substance use and mental health disorders. This individual will be part of a multidisciplinary team of providers to provide comprehensive mental health care and support for patients in an Ambulatory setting. Under the direction of clinical staff the Peer Support Specialist will initiate contact with identified patients in the SMART Clinic program with substance use disorders via phone, text, email and/or via e-mail. This individual will need to demonstrate understanding of peers' experiences and feelings and have the ability to relate their own recovery story and with permission, the recovery stories of others to inspire hope. The Peer Support Specialist will maintain a caseload of clients/patients and assist them and clinical staff to help facilitate an appropriate level of care. In addition, the Peer Support Specialist will lead substance use specific groups and meet with the client both in and outside of the clinic. Responsibilities will include providing peer support services and related support to new and established patients in a collaborative, academic environment, timely preparation of chart notes and submission of billing through the electronic medical record and participating in team/staff meetings. Qualified candidates will have peer support services experience in providing support to patients with a focus on patients greater than or equal to 18 years of age and with a diagnosed substance use disorder.

Chandler Hospital – Lexington, KY, Good Samaritan Hospital – Lexington, KY, Eastern State Hospital – Lexington, KY as well as various other clinics and departments throughout the UK HealthCare system and outside organizations throughout Kentucky. Our team of researchers are working to advance the understanding of behavioral health and how behavioral health conditions are managed and treated. Our department has five ACGME-certified residency training programs which focus on training more than 50 physicians each year to become the future leaders in psychiatry.

The Department of Psychiatry's ambulatory clinic is located near the Hamburg area of Lexington at 245 Fountain Ct., Lexington, KY, 40509.
