Assistant Professor of Special Education (tenure track)

Established in 1908, the St. John's University School of Education was the second school in New York State to award graduate degrees to teachers. The School of Education fosters close relationships with public, private, and parochial schools across the New York region and is greatly respected nationally and globally for preparing highly qualified teachers for success in today's multicultural, inclusive learning environments. The Department of Education Specialties offers graduate programs in Special Education, Literacy and TESOL. The programs in Special Education are differentiated by age - early childhood, childhood, adolescence - and cover a range of career change and Master's programs, advanced certificates, and online offerings.

Job Title: Assistant Professor of Special Education (tenure track)

Campus: Queens

Job Summary:

The full-time faculty position is on a research tenure track line for an Assistant Rank. The faculty will be part of the Department of Education Specialties, within the Programs in Special Education.

Primary responsibilities include graduate teaching of courses in special education ( emphasis on early childhood special education); student advisement; assisting with program functions and other Departmental interdisciplinary activities; maintaining an active research agenda, and service to the program, school, university and the profession.

Essential Functions:
  • Full-time graduate teaching load for fall and spring semesters
  • Actively participate in student advisement and student support
  • Maintain an active research agenda, including seeking external grant funding
  • Contribute to Departmental interdisciplinary activities and initiatives.
  • Engagement in academic service learning and field-supervision of graduate students at practicum sites across the NYC boroughs and Long Island will be required.
  • Service to the program, School, University, and the academic profession


Competencies
  • Earned Doctorate in Special Education or related field (before start date)
  • Minimum 3 years of full-time teaching experience in areas of Early Childhood/Childhood Special Education for diverse learners and those with disabilities in schools and or community/clinical settings.
  • Prior graduate level teaching experience and research interests in the areas of child development, inclusive education, working with young children and families in diverse educational settings is preferred.
  • Demonstrate strong potential for scholarly activity and research publications.
  • Experience in building effective school partnerships/teaching residencies in high needs, urban special education settings with students and families from a range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds is valued.
  • Strong demonstrated commitment to anti-racism pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching practices is essential.
  • Experience with online pedagogies and use of technology for instruction is preferred.


Queens campus office location

On site ( NYC metropolitan area and Long Island) supervision of graduate students at practicum sites

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Full time faculty position on a research tenure track, as per the St John's Univ CBA

Travel

Travel to student sites for practicum supervision is required. Travel reimbursement is provided as per TSOE travel policy guidelines

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and 8-10 years related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • List licenses or certifications required/preferred.
  • Earned Doctorate in Special Education or related field (before start date)
  • Minimum 3 years of full-time teaching experience in areas of Early Childhood/Childhood Special Education for diverse learners and those with disabilities in schools and or community/clinical settings.
  • Demonstrate strong potential for scholarly activity and research publications.
  • NYS teaching certification in childhood/early childhood SPED is highly preferred.


Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Master's degree
  • CPA
  • Prior graduate level teaching experience and research interests in the areas of child development, inclusive education, working with young children and families in diverse educational settings is preferred.
  • Experience in building effective school partnerships/teaching residencies in high needs, urban special education settings with students and families from a range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds is valued.
  • Strong demonstrated commitment to anti-racism pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching practices is essential.
  • Experience with online pedagogies and use of technology for instruction is preferred.


In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual/hourly salary range for this position is $72,700 - $78,500. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
