Summary:

JOB SUMMARY

A technical position requiring technical knowledge of surgical specimens, tissues, bodily fluids and pathology specimens of any type. The incumbent will assist the Pathologist, Scientists, and Phlebotomists in duties deemed necessary for processing patient orders/specimens. This person will work with the phlebotomy personnel to assure that adequate samples are obtained and dispatched to the technical areas and reference laboratories in a timely manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS

High stress position with exposure to dangerous infectious materials, odorous chemicals and specimens. May be exposed to low levels of radiation, electrical hazards and low levels of carcinogens. High exposure to needles and sharps. All working reagents containing hazardous materials listed in detail in the "Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) Manual" available to all employees. Incumbent is responsible for this information. This individual is responsible for a variety of standardized procedures requiring constant mental concentration. This individual interacts with patients. Must be able to use independent judgment in solving common problems. Understands collection priorities such as STAT, ASAP, Timed. Possesses ability to plan, organize and prioritize work assignments. Physically able to stand for long periods, endure walking and ability to work under stressful conditions. Must have adequate vision to perform the job. (i.e. color blind test)

QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduate or equivalent with strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to deal with co‑workers of all ages firmly, fairly, tactfully and diplomatically. Possess a strong working knowledge of Medical terminology as it relates to the Laboratory and all the diagnostic processes. Strong computer skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Notify pathologist when surgical frozen sections are received.

2. Assist with documenting and tracking all surgical specimens.

3. Process and accession all specimens delivered to the Department of Laboratories: (blood, body fluids, and tissues, surgical).

4. Ensure all specimens are in the appropriate container, collected properly and labeled correctly.

5. Ensure that all specimens have the required information for processing (meeting all regulatory guidelines).

6. Centrifuge specimens timely to maintain specimen integrity.

7. Follow OSHA guidelines when processing and accessioning specimens.

8. Collection verify specimens/orders in the LIS, entering the appropriate initials, dates and times.

9. Evaluate specimens for the Automation Line. Check for appropriate order label and specimen volume.

10. Dispatch/deliver specimens to the appropriate testing area according to priority.

11. Ensure all necessary specimens are sent to the reference laboratory along with the appropriate paperwork.

12. Ensure appropriate packaging for mailing of biohazard specimens.

13. Assure phlebotomists are dispatched on a fair and equitable basis in a timely manner.

14. Enter necessary data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to admit patients, order tests, add comments, etc.

15. Knowledge and proper use of the Hospital Information System (HIS).

16. Knowledge and proper usage of the on-line Reference Inquiry Directory and guidelines.

17. Knowledge of preparing and sending specimen manifest via reference system.

18. Knowledge of all reference laboratory requisitions.

19. Verify orders and request test orders and/or cancellations when needed.

20. Register/admit patients in the Hospital Information System.

21. Order and stock necessary supplies.

22. Maintain appropriate logs and required records.

23. Answer phones, take messages, send faxes, as required.

24. Assist in orientation and training of new employees.

25. Perform all maintenance on the equipment within the pathology/accessioning work area and the required documentation as dictated by policies and procedures.

26. Responsible for the proper usage of and packaging of specimens in the Pneumatic Tube System.

27. Print and resolve collection and pending logs.

28. May rotate all shifts, including weekends and holidays. Also, may be assigned to a work area or may rotate to all areas/sections of the department.

29. Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.

30. Ensure that the laboratory leadership is informed and kept abreast of all needs, and concerns.

31. Assist on special projects as needed by laboratory leadership.

32. Maintain confidentiality.

33. Perform other duties as assigned.
