 Nelson County, VA is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Building Code Official.  Responsibilities include reviewing building permit applications and submitted plans for approval in accordance with Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC), International Building Code (IBC), and Virginia Amusement Device Regulations (VADR) for the County of Nelson, conducting site inspections of structures and issuing corrective orders in accordance with USBC, IBC, and VADR, administering and enforcing the local ordinance for erosion and sediment control, and bio-solids, supervising and training department staff, managing department budget and implementing department policies and procedures.

Successful candidate must possess qualifications of Building Official pursuant to USBC section 105.1.1 and working knowledge of: USBC, IBC, and VADR, general knowledge of architectural and engineering principles and construction materials, practices, and techniques, and basic knowledge of concepts of soil conservation, and budget principles. The ability to read blueprints and construction drawings, and accurately interpret complex codes and ordinances is required.  Current DHCD CBO certification pursuant to USBC section 105.1.2 Certification of Building Official is preferred, or successful completion of training and examination requirements for a Building Official as established by the USBC section 105.1.2 within 12 months of hire and attendance of the Academy's Core module within 180 days of appointment is required. (USBC 105.1.3 Noncertified Building Official.) The ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the public, both verbally and in written form and management experience is essential.  Working knowledge of iWorQ Building Inspections software is desired. At least five (5) years experience in building inspections or related field with at least (3) years in responsible charge is preferred.  Any combination of education and experience that would confer equivalent knowledge and ability shall be deemed to satisfy this requirement.  A valid and unrestricted Virginia driver's license is also required and Nelson County residency within one year of hire is preferred.  Salary dependent on qualifications, excellent benefits package offered.
