Manager, Systems and Operations
The Information Technology Department at James Madison University (JMU) is seeking a highly motivated individual to join theJMU team as the Manager of Systems and Operations. The primary responsibilities of the position will be to provide leadership to a technical team of Server Administrators and Operations staff and to oversee all aspects of the IT data centers. This position will report to the Director of Technical Services.
The Manager of Systems and Operations will be responsible for the following:
- Providing effective leadership to the Systems and Operations staff consisting of 6 Windows Administrators, 4 Linux Administrators and 2 Operations staff.
- Ensuring 24/7 operations of the IT data centers and working with facilities management and support vendors to remediate any issues.
- Ensuring 24/7 operations of IT computing systems including servers, storage and tape archive hardware.
- Ensuring that computing systems are built according to secure computing standards (i.e. ISO, NIST).
- Collaborating with other technical departments to develop and meet project implementation requirements and deadlines.
- Working with vendors to purchase new systems, renew support, resolve issues and explore new technologies.
- Providing technical advice and guidance to IT and the JMU community.
The successful candidate should have significant experience leading technical teams and building a collaborative work environment; experience with managing physical and cloud data centers and an understanding of data center environmental system (i.e. HVAC, power, security); experience working as part of large IT environment to accomplish project and departmental goals; ability to prepare, present and understand formal and informal written and oral technical material; excellent customer service skills. Experience evaluating and applying best practice security standards (i.e. ISO, NIST) in a complex computing environments is desirable. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
