Fire Life Safety Inspector/Plans Examiner
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under general direction of the HAS Building Official, reviews permit applications and associated plans submitted for construction on Airport property for compliance with adopted fire and life safety codes and standards. Consults with project design teams during project planning and design and makes recommendations to ensure project's code compliance, as well as design criteria to improve the maintainability or longevity of Airport facilities as specified by the Houston Airport System (HAS). Performs field inspection of newly constructed or modified facilities to ensure compliance with approved plans and all applicable fire and life safety codes, standards and FAA requirements.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs fire and life safety plan review and inspections on Airport construction projects to ensure conformance with the adopted International Fire Codes, including City of Houston amendments, and any applicable airport standards.
2. Reviews submittals, including fire suppression plans, fire alarm plans, voice evac plans, etc. for compliance with appropriate codes, standards and regulations.
3. Records and documents inspection and/or testing results within permit tracking software; issues deficiency reports and monitors remedial work; records re-inspection and retesting results; ensures correction of all deficiencies.
4. Ensures Airport facilities comply with FAA and other mandated design standards.
5. Provides technical assistance as it relates to code interpretation and conformance, constructability and quality assurance at each project phase from design through final inspection.
6. Explain and interprets regulations, guidelines, standards and criteria to design professionals, contractors, tenants and other interested parties.
7. Attends construction meetings as required and reports problems and projects status to supervisor.
8. Provides coordination between the Houston Airport System Building Standards Group and the City of Houston Fire Marshal's office regarding fire and life safety issues.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
1. Bachelor's degree in fire sciences, public safety or a related field such as architecture, engineering, construction technology or construction management is preferred.
2. Five (5) years-experience in construction document plan review, fire inspection and investigative field.
3. Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
4. Possession of a valid Class C driver's license.
5. Ability to detect and correct non-complying items during plan review and through on-site inspection.
6. Knowledge of local, state, and national codes and regulations relating to major public works development.
7. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Outstanding customer service skills and timely communication.
8. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
9. Must be familiar with fundamental concepts of emergency management and fire protection.
10. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an Air Operations Area (AOA) badge.

REQUIRED
Fire Inspector Certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
