Delaware Online/The News Journal, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a Trending/Breaking News Reporter to join our statewide team of journalists. The ideal candidate will be a tenacious, self-starting, digitally savvy journalist who can use social media and other tools to follow our readers' pulse, do original reporting and add value to a reader’s experience.

This reporter must be able to seamlessly move between topics to focus on news trending online or likely to gain momentum with our digital audience. Quick, tight, lively writing is a must.  This reporter must have a passion for telling stories quickly when needed, in-depth when called for, and always with accuracy.

The position requires an early start each day to get ahead of the news and reach our audience at peak times. It will also include a Saturday shift.

The News Journal is a statewide news organization covering the First State. Delaware is a great place to live, just 20 minutes from Philadelphia, 90 minutes from Baltimore and 2 hours from Washington, D.C. and New York City. Delaware beaches are among the best on the East Coast.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

  • Strong writing skills and a command of grammar, ethics and AP style.
  • Comfortable in fluid, fast-breaking, sometimes stressful situations.
  • Eager to capitalize on live, breaking and trending moments by creating quick-turn content for social media and other digital platforms
  • Experience with social media, including Instagram Stories, as a tool to build audience and as a source for beat development.
  • Experience with and interest in multimedia, including video and audio.
  • A self-starter who owns the beat yet works collaboratively with others locally and regionally to meet common goals.
  • A journalist committed to values of fairness, diversity, inclusion and professionalism.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least two years of applicable experience as a reporter/writer.
  • Experience with content management systems and social media channels.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check and a motor vehicle record check and drug screen (for driving roles only)
