About this Opportunity

The Ball State University Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a tenure-line Theatre Education position beginning August of 2024. The Department seeks an individual with a commitment to collaborative discourse, interdisciplinary inquiry, and entrepreneurial learning practices to work in our highly successful theatre education program. The successful candidate will be an accomplished pedagogue, teacher, mentor, and artist in the area of theatre education within a program that enjoys a placement rate of close to 100%. Ball State's theatre education option offers an innovative and “hands on” training curriculum consisting of rigorous and varied coursework, a strong foundation in both theatre and secondary education courses, and an emphasis on teaching experiences within the schools from the outset. Specializations should also include an understanding of technical theatre, theatre for youth, and a strong relationship with theatre educators across the country. Preferred consideration will be given to any candidate who possesses expertise in an additional area of theatre or dance including acting, dance, directing, stage management, theatre history, musical theatre, or design. Applicants should also be committed to inclusive pedagogies in their teaching, scholarship, and artistry.

Salary and benefit packages for this position are competitive, with salaries for this opportunity beginning at $53,000 annually.

Our dynamic faculty function as collaborative, innovative, inclusive, and adaptive members of the College of Fine Arts community, both within and beyond the home unit, serving as quality teachers, productive in creative and/or scholarly work, engaged in public service activities, and contributing to the Ball State and Muncie communities and beyond. Additionally, lifelong learning at Ball State University extends educational engagement beyond the classroom and includes learning for professional development, personal enrichment, or other goals throughout one's lifetime. Faculty will be expected to participate in the department's, college's, and university's lifelong learning opportunities when available and may be assigned teaching responsibility in this area as part of their overall responsibilities.
  • A teaching load that may include all levels of course work within theatre education including methodology and introductory courses, directing for young audiences, and technical theatre for theatre educators;
  • The ability to serve as a mentor and guide to pre-theatre educators in both production work within secondary schools and in more traditional student teaching settings;
  • The ideal candidate will also have expertise in at least one additional area of theatre including, but not limited to, acting, directing, design, history/criticism, dramaturgy, playwriting, and/or stage management;
  • Involved in creating courses or certificate programs that capitalize on the University's commitment to training educators post their undergraduate experience;
  • Collaborate with colleagues on the vision, design, and management of the Theatre Education area;
  • A dedication and commitment to helping foster and cultivate overall student success;
  • Serve as a creative artist within the Department's active production program;
  • Creating an active and tenure-worthy professional profile in the area of theatre education. This includes, most notably, scholarly publications in the area of theatre education, along with a balance of work in professional venues, presentations at reputable theatre and dance conferences, and other related professional activities that benefit the candidate, University, Department, and students being served.
  • Fulfilling service obligations, including assigned committee work at the Department, College, and University level, on a national, regional, and local level.
  • Working in collaboration with theatre and dance faculty, staff, and students in facilitating the theatre and dance production program at Ball State University.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in theatre, education, or related discipline completed by date of employment or equivalent professional experience.

Past or present certification as a secondary teacher working in theatre or experience as a teaching artist with elementary or secondary students.

Ability to teach all levels of theatre education courses.

Authorization to work in the US

Employer will consider sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Theatre Education completed by date of employment.

K-12 Teaching Experience

Three years of teaching experience at the university/college level.

Experience with production work including design.

Expertise in at least one additional area of theatre including, but not limited to, acting, directing, design, history/criticism, dramaturgy, playwriting, and/or stage management;

Experience mentoring and advising aspiring secondary theatre education teachers.
